Supporting Breastfeeding Mothers under Acute Stress
Caregivers under both acute and chronic stress sometimes make decisions that are difficult for health care providers to understand. Recent research into the neurobiology of behavior provides insight on how stress influences our ability to make decisions. In this webinar, we will describe the influence of stress hormones on decision-making, describe the indicators of Acute Stress Disorder, and discuss support for mothers coping with acute stress in the NICU.
This pre-recorded webinar can be watched alone or as the first part of a 3 part series titled "Lactation Support in the Shadow of Maternal Trauma." In the full series, participants will learn about this research and how the findings might be used to better support informed infant feeding decisions among mothers facing serious physical, financial, social or emotional challenges. At the end of the session, attendees will be able to:
- Describe the two “pathways” typically used to make day-to-day decisions
- Describe the potential effects of stress hormones on decision-making processes
- List at least 4 of the criteria used to identify acute stress disorder
