Pests and Diseases of the Hive FIELD DAY
Field Days are FREE and are one of the perks of being a member of the California Master Beekeeper Program.
Under the direction of Elina L. Niño, Ph.D., Director of the CAMB program, we will be exercising our observation skills and techniques on what to look for in healthy vs. diseased hives. This Field Day is open to 2016 and 2017 CAMBP Apprentices. There are only 20 seats so please book your spot ASAP.
We will examine the “P”s (parasites, pests, pesticides, pathogens, pasture and pollination) and the impact they have on the health of a colony
Upon completion of this Field Day, participants will be able to:
- Use the Pyramid of IPM Tactics to guide their proactive treatment plans for colony health
- Examine, identify and measure Nosema spores within a colony using lab microscopes
- Recognize and identify signs of AFB, EFB, CBP, DWV and other honey bee pathogens
- Identify pests of the honey bee
- Determine reasons for pathogen spread
- Review the California Apiary Protection Act and determine the protocol for AFB infested hives. The Field day will be hosted at the E. L. Niño Bee Lab, 1 Bee Biology Rd, Davis, CA 9561 from 9am – 5pm on Friday October 5th, 2018. Refreshments and a catered lunch will be served.
At the EL Niño Bee Lab we work with live honey bees. Honey bees are stinging insects and while most stings do not require medical attention, a small portion of the human population can develop a life-threatening allergy. When working in the hives you will need to wear closed-toed and closed-heel shoes, long pants and long-sleeved shirt. Protective gear will be provided for you, but if you prefer you can bring your own. If stung, immediately remove the stinger by scraping it off and wash the area to remove alarm pheromone. If you experience shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea or any other serious symptoms, immediately seek medical attention.
